"Can you read this or is it a strain on the old eyes? I tell you what I will make it bigger! Is that better for you, more legible…easy to read."
How many times have you told designers to make the type bigger? Typography is all about legibility and the power of the message; certain typefaces do the job better than others. We are all influenced by styles.
For example
Some like The Sun newspaper because of its boldness and in your face attitude; others prefer The Times because of its refined and sophisticated approach. Utilising typography effectively can create very powerful messages or propaganda material. But its not just about the typefaces we use, its about creating visual communication that leads the eye to the message, its about clever use of space and clarity.
In a world where technology paves the way for the way we communicate, it's easy to just key in the letters and numbers choose a typeface and create a message. Whether it's produced via a traditional letterpress or the latest computer hardware its makes no difference as long as the technician creating the work, considers and understands the message it's trying to portray.
Are we all great typography technicians?
It may seem ridiculous but a farmer or greengrocer can just as easily create a powerful communication message as a designer who has studied for years at the best of design schools. Typography can be at is most effective when its written infact I would go as far as to say that a freshness and personality is visually articulated better through the messages we write with our own hands.
So even the guy at the fruit stall selling a pound of apples can be a great typographer. Therefore we are all technicians of typography in one-way or another, just look around you a little more.
